Gela Hospital Funding Dispute Amid Political Tensions
Fratelli d'Italia deputy Diego Iaglietti warned that the mayor of Gela is turning the city's serious health emergency into a political showcase to bolster the Five Star Movement. Iaglietti emphasized that the regional government has unequivocally rejected any defunding of the Gela hospital, a position reiterated by regional health assessor Marcello Caruso in a press release and a video conference with opposition politicians.
He called for responsibility, unity and concrete action to address the chronic shortage of doctors and staff, urging investment, better organization and security rather than propaganda. Iaglietti highlighted that the broader Italian health system faces similar staffing crises, with several regions resorting to recruiting foreign doctors, and stressed the need for capable administrators to secure resources for Gela’s hospital.
The debate reflects ongoing tensions between local and regional authorities over health service funding and the politicisation of public health issues in the city.
