Gela housing occupants appeal to Sicilian President Schifani

Occupants of IACP social housing in Gela have sent a formal appeal to the President of the Sicilian Region, Renato Schifani, seeking an end to recent evictions and a path toward legal residency.

The committee representing the residents describes a state of deep desperation and anxiety following a wave of evictions. Many families, including those with young children, claim they originally occupied the properties when they were in extreme disrepair and walled up, using their own limited savings to make the homes habitable.

The residents are not seeking special privileges but rather the opportunity to regularize their status and pay what is owed to exit the uncertainty of illegal occupation. Local officials, including Mayor Terenziano Di Stefano and Social Services Assessor Valeria Caci, have been involved in discussions regarding the situation, and a report on the IACP housing issue in the city has been submitted to the Regional government.
