Gela implements stricter tomato safety protocols after salmonella recall

Authorities in the Piana di Gela region are implementing stricter safety protocols for cherry tomato production following a salmonella contamination alert. The Ministry of Health recently ordered the recall of a specific batch (number 210) from the brand G&V Ortaggi after bacteria were detected.

The new measures, discussed in Caltanissetta, include mandatory testing of irrigation water from wells and laboratory analysis of every production lot before sale. Producers will also be required to immediately notify health authorities of any positive results. This follows an investigation into a potential link between the product and illnesses reported among children in Valtrompia, though a direct connection is still being verified by investigators.

Experts note that irrigation water from contaminated sources is a primary risk factor for salmonella in horticultural crops.
