Gela Mayor Advances Tax Amnesty and Tariff Plan to Tackle Debt

Mayor Terenziano Di Stefano of Gela is preparing to present to the city council a set of measures aimed at addressing the municipality’s severe financial distress. The proposals include maintaining existing Tari waste‑service tariffs while introducing a "rottamazione quinquies" – a five‑year tax amnesty that would allow citizens to pay outstanding municipal taxes without interest or penalties. The council is set to vote before the end of July, after technical issues and a previously unfavorable opinion from municipal auditors were resolved.

The mayor reports that the city is owed at least €50 million in unpaid taxes; recovering even half of that amount through the amnesty could significantly reduce the fiscal gap, provided the national Ministry of Economy approves a rebalanced municipal budget.
