Gela mobilization planned for October 3 to defend local healthcare
A demonstration is scheduled for October 3 in Gela to advocate for the protection and strengthening of local healthcare services, specifically focusing on the Vittorio Emanuele Hospital. Various organizations and political groups have joined the mobilization, including the Democratic Party (PD) and MazzarinoLab.
Protesters and local leaders are demanding immediate interventions to address a healthcare system described as being in crisis. Key issues cited include understaffed departments, overwhelmed emergency rooms, long waiting lists, and the need for adequate diagnostic tools. The Democratic Party has called for the immediate arrival of medical personnel and the development of a new hospital capable of serving the broader district, including Butera, Riesi, Mazzarino, and Niscemi.
MazzarinoLab emphasized that access to healthcare is a fundamental social infrastructure necessary to prevent depopulation in peripheral areas. They argued that a territory can only develop if essential services like health, school, and mobility are guaranteed, ensuring that a resident's location does not dictate the quality of their medical care.
