Gela museum closure draws criticism from Italia Viva in Sicily

Regional Italia Viva representative Giuseppe Perna warned that the long‑standing closure of Gela's archaeological museum highlights the regional government's failure to protect cultural heritage. He said the museum, shut for about four years, lacks staff, promotion and basic resources, preventing the display of recovered artifacts and the Greek shipwreck exhibit. Perna criticised the regional authorities for not reopening the museum despite multiple postponed inauguration dates and for the superintendency’s apparent absence.

The criticism also pointed to the municipal administration’s efforts to fill the gap left by the region, while questioning the handling of archaeological finds and the future of the museum's collections.
