Gelbes Band initiative allows public fruit harvesting in Germany

The ‘Gelbes Band’ (Yellow Ribbon) harvest initiative is being implemented again in several German municipalities, including the Donau-Ries district and the community of Gilching. Under this program, fruit tree owners mark their trees with a yellow ribbon to signal that the fruit is free for the public to harvest.

The initiative aims to prevent ripe fruit from rotting on the ground and to promote sustainable, regional consumption. In Gilching, public orchards on Gautinger Straße, Ringstraße, and Frauwiesenweg are participating. Participants are encouraged to harvest carefully without damaging branches and to take only what they can use.

In Donau-Ries, District Administrator Michael Dinkelmeier noted that the initiative provides a low-threshold way to save good fruit from waste. While some trees are experiencing varying yields due to natural alternation and extreme drought, many apple and pear trees remain available for picking. The campaign is supported by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture.
