Gelephu prepares for 100,000 visitors for 108 Stupa event

The town of Gelephu is preparing for a massive gathering on November 1, 2026, as part of Project 108. The event marks the simultaneous completion of 108 Jangchub Chorten, or Buddhist stupas, which stand approximately 15 meters tall along the Mao River.

Authorities expect around 100,000 visitors, including international guests from roughly 20 countries, Buddhist teachers, and monks. Officials have noted that Bhutan has not witnessed a gathering of this scale before. To accommodate the influx, more than 30,000 vehicles have been registered, and local authorities are implementing extensive traffic and public transport arrangements.

The project is situated within the Gelephu Mindfulness City, a special administrative region being developed in southern Bhutan. The initiative was announced by King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck in February 2026. Local hospitality sectors, including hotels and guesthouses, report being nearly fully booked in anticipation of the event.
