The protagonist traces her connection to the land through her grandparents, Rodolfo and Gelsomina Ventura. Rodolfo was a former mayor of Camugnano and a member of the Communist Party, while Gelsomina passed away in 2000. Her childhood was defined by life on their farm, which included tending to cows, rabbits, and chickens.
