GEMA launches PLAI dataset for AI music tool training

Germany's collecting society GEMA, together with partners Bailer Music Publishing, Earmotion Audio Creation, Intervox Production Music, Music Sculptor and Sonoton Music, introduced PLAI by GEMA, the first Europe-wide licensed music dataset designed for training AI‑music tools. The collection contains roughly 178,000 sound files from over 57,000 works across more than 60 genres, and bundles both audio files and the necessary copyright and master‑rights clearances in a single service.

The dataset targets developers of AI music applications, offering a legally secure source of high‑quality music data. Its first customer is Karlsruhe‑based Klangio, which uses the data to train its tool that converts audio into sheet music. GEMA views the launch as both a commercial venture and a strategic element of its ongoing legal dispute with AI company Suno, underscoring that AI training can coexist with fair compensation for creators. "If both sides are interested in responsible collaboration, we can find common solutions and enable innovation on a reliable legal foundation," said Thomas Theune, GEMA's director of broadcasting and online services.
