Italian dance festivals showcase contemporary works in Bolzano and Venice

The Bolzano Danza festival presented the collective Cult of Magic, offering a dark, immersive performance that probes the unconscious mind through contemporary dance. The production used shadowy lighting and movement as a language to reveal hidden impulses, desires and fears, turning the stage into a psychological exploration.

In Venice, the Biennale di Danza highlighted its commitment to training and new creations. Director McGregor praised the role of the College workshops and the commissioning of fresh choreographies. Among the highlighted works, South‑African choreographer Mamela Nyamza performed "The Herd/Less," a piece that uses zinc sheets to symbolize the violence experienced by women living in makeshift homes. Nyamza explained that walking on the metal represents the oppression and suffering of those women, linking personal loss with broader societal issues.

Both festivals underscore a growing emphasis on experimental choreography and socially engaged art within Italy’s contemporary dance scene.
