Gemli Tabya fortification in Kars faces decay
Gemli Tabya, a nearly 200-year-old Ottoman fortification in Kars, Turkey, is facing significant structural decay due to a lack of maintenance. Aerial footage has revealed the site's unique architectural design, which features a rare crescent and horseshoe-shaped plan.
Built in 1854 by Kerim Pasha, the fortification played a strategic role in several historical conflicts, including the 1855 Ottoman-Russian War, the 1877-1878 Ottoman-Russian War, and the Ottoman-Armenian conflicts between 1918 and 1920. Beyond its military history, the site also served as a women's prison during one period.
Despite its historical and engineering importance, the structure currently suffers from collapsed walls and internal deformations. Local observers note that the site is in need of urgent protection and restoration to preserve it as a cultural heritage site and potential tourist destination.
