Gen energije advances logistics and cooling plans for Krško Nuclear Power Plant Jek 2

Preparations for the construction of the second unit of the Krško Nuclear Power Plant (Jek 2) are intensifying following government decisions to begin state spatial planning. A preliminary transport study has identified the Port of Koper as the most suitable entry point for the massive components required for the project. The logistics involve transporting equipment weighing up to 980 tons and measuring up to 44.5 meters in length via a 274-kilometer route through various Slovenian regions.

Regarding cooling infrastructure, technical director Bruno Glaser of Gen energije has proposed a natural draft cooling tower as the optimal solution. Standing between 193 and 198 meters tall, this reinforced concrete structure is designed to be highly earthquake-resistant and energy-efficient, as it does not require fans. While the initial investment for a natural draft tower is higher than hybrid alternatives, it offers lower long-term operational costs and less noise.

Local municipal councilors in Krško have expressed concerns regarding the height of the proposed tower and its visual impact on the landscape. Discussions have also addressed safety measures, with technical experts asserting that the tower would be constructed to be significantly stronger than any other building in the surrounding area to ensure stability during seismic events.
