Gen Z and Millennials Choose Gyms Over Homeownership
Gym and fitness‑studio memberships among Americans under 35 are rising faster than among older adults, reaching an all‑time high of about 36 % for ages 18‑24, according to research from the Health and Fitness Association. The trend coincides with a drop in marriage and child‑bearing among younger gym members – a decade ago half of members aged 20‑40 were married, now only one‑third, and the share with children fell from 44 % to 36 %.
Analysts attribute the boom to social factors such as the desire for in‑person interaction and the influence of social media, but also to broader economic shifts: many younger adults are postponing or forgoing traditional milestones like buying a home, marrying, and having children. For this cohort, investing time and money in the gym has become the primary project for personal improvement, replacing the classic “home‑renovation” goal of earlier generations.
