Gen Z dating trends face digital and economic challenges
Gen Z dating culture is being significantly reshaped by digital technology and shifting social behaviors. Research indicates that phone screens often disrupt romantic intimacy, a phenomenon described as ‘attention infidelity,’ where partners are physically present but mentally diverted by algorithms and scrolling. This digital distraction can erode trust and increase feelings of isolation.
Psychologist Dr. Orion Taraban highlights several specific trends and challenges facing this generation. These include ‘Shrekked’—dating someone perceived as less attractive to ensure they appreciate the partner more—and ‘Frankensteining,’ which involves attempting to mold a partner to meet specific standards. Other behaviors include ‘Clear Coding,’ where individuals present checklists of desired traits on first dates, and ‘Benching,’ the practice of keeping romantic options as backups.
Economic factors also play a role, with the average cost of a date reaching approximately $225. The abundance of choice provided by dating apps has contributed to a competitive landscape, with some reports suggesting that roughly 85% of women on apps are dating only 15% of men, leading to increased dissatisfaction and a rise in what some call a ‘sexless generation.’
