Gen Z dating trends show rise in spiritual practices and new terminology

Recent data and expert analysis highlight evolving dating behaviors among Gen Z. A survey by DatingNews indicates that 64% of Gen Z respondents have utilized spiritual, psychic, or manifestation practices to influence their romantic lives. This includes 29% practicing manifestation or scripting, 25% visiting psychics, and 19% paying for love spells or rituals. This trend shows a significant generational gap, as participation rates decrease in older cohorts, including Millennials (51%), Gen X (25%), and Baby Boomers (12%).

In addition to spiritual trends, new relationship terminology is emerging to describe modern dating patterns. Terms such as ‘shrekking’ (dating someone perceived as less attractive), ‘frankensteining’ (attempting to reshape a partner), ‘benching’ (keeping a backup option), and ‘situationships’ (undefined relationships) are being used to navigate app-based culture.

Economic factors also play a role in modern dating. Research from the BMO Real Financial Progress Index shows that Gen Z spends an average of $205 per date, while Millennials spend approximately $252. The rising cost of dating has led nearly half of singles to question if dating is financially worthwhile, with cost pressures impacting the savings goals of half of the Gen Z population.
