Gen Z drives US job mobility and wage increases
Data from Bank of America indicates that job switching is becoming increasingly profitable for workers in the United States, with Gen Z leading the trend in labor market mobility. In July, wage increases associated with changing jobs reached their highest level in over three years. This trend suggests that employers remain willing to pay premiums for employees possessing specific skills, despite a general slowdown in hiring.
Weekly earners are seeing particularly notable increases, partly driven by sectors with high numbers of hourly workers and fluctuating schedules. While the average annual salary premium for job switchers has begun to trend upward after consecutive declines, it remains below pre-pandemic levels.
Beyond financial metrics, Gen Z is fundamentally reshaping workplace culture. This generation prioritizes personal growth, mental well-being, and quality of life over traditional long-term corporate stability. They favor hybrid or flexible work models and are highly proficient with digital tools. For many Gen Z workers, frequent job changes are viewed as a method of professional development; if a role lacks opportunities for learning or satisfaction, it is often treated as temporary.
