Gen Z driving growth in secondhand and upcycled fashion markets

Gen Z and millennials are increasingly adopting lifestyle habits previously associated with older generations, specifically regarding secondhand consumption and garment care. According to a 2025 report from ThredUp, 68% of Gen Z and millennials participate in secondhand shopping, driven by fashion statements, waste reduction, and environmental concerns. The global resale market is projected to reach $367 billion by 2029.

Beyond purchasing, there is a resurgence in mending, altering, and upcycling clothing. While older generations often repaired items out of financial necessity, younger consumers are adopting these skills as creative hobbies and a means to reduce digital screen time. The upcycled fashion market, valued at over eight billion dollars, is expected to approximately double in value by 2034, according to Precedence Research.

Thrifting has evolved from a budget-driven necessity into a mainstream cultural movement. Enthusiasts utilize online communities to share unique finds, ranging from furniture to clothing, as a response to current economic and environmental conditions.
