Gen Z embraces flexible work, AI and side incomes, IWG study finds

A new survey by International Workplace Group (IWG), the operator of coworking brands such as Spaces, Regus, HQ and Signature, shows that 33 % of Gen Z workers are already engaged in or are considering a second job to boost earnings. Nearly half (48 %) cite higher income and greater financial security as the main driver, amid high living costs, inflation and loan pressures.

The research, conducted among Gen Z professionals in the United Kingdom, finds that 55 % believe artificial intelligence will decisively shape their career paths, prompting many to develop new skills and adopt “portfolio careers” that combine multiple roles, entrepreneurial activities and freelance projects. Flexibility, creativity, collaboration and adaptability are highlighted as the most valuable competencies for future work. The trend reflects a move away from traditional single‑employer careers toward diversified income streams and “career lily pads,” where workers shift between sectors and projects to increase earnings and resilience.
