Gen Z faces recruitment challenges due to soft skills gap
Generation Z is facing significant hurdles in the labor market due to a perceived deficiency in soft skills. A survey by General Assembly reveals that over one-quarter of executives would not recruit fresh graduates at this time. The primary concern is not a lack of technical or hard skills, but rather a deficit in interpersonal abilities such as communication, problem-solving, creativity, collaboration, adaptability, and conflict resolution.
Reports from the Strada Institute for the Future of Work and the Burning Glass Institute indicate that more than half of bachelor's degree graduates in the United States experience underemployment one year after graduation. This trend is placing additional pressure on management; research from Intelligent.com suggests that one in five managers has considered resigning due to the stress of managing Gen Z employees, with 75% of managers stating that Gen Z workers require more time and resources than other generations.
The pandemic is cited as a major contributing factor. According to Gartner, 46% of Gen Z workers feel the pandemic hindered their educational and career goals. The shift to remote learning during this period resulted in fewer opportunities to develop essential social skills, such as networking, public speaking, and navigating professional office environments.
