Gen Z fitness trends shift toward strength training

Data from Sport England indicates a significant shift in fitness preferences among Gen Z in Britain, with more than one quarter of young adults prioritizing gym memberships over activities such as holidays or dining out. This demographic is increasingly moving away from traditional exercises like running, swimming, and fitness classes in favor of gym-based strength training to improve appearance, build strength, and boost health.

The roots of modern fitness can be traced back to the early 19th century. Following Napoleon Bonaparte’s invasion of Prussia in 1806, Friedrich Ludwig Jahn established the first Turnplatz, or open-air gymnasium, in 1811. Jahn’s goal was to improve the physical strength of Prussian men through activities like wrestling and vaulting, utilizing equipment such as parallel and horizontal bars. This philosophy of physical fitness for national strength spread globally, eventually leading to the development of gymnastics and bodybuilding.
