Gen Z interest in skilled trades rises amid AI concerns

A growing number of young people, particularly Gen Z, are increasingly interested in pursuing skilled trades such as mechanics, electricians, and plumbers. According to Thumbtack’s Future of the Skilled Trades Report, nearly half of surveyed Americans aged 16 to 30 are either learning a trade or considering one. This shift is partly driven by concerns regarding artificial intelligence, with 30% of respondents stating that the rise of AI has increased their interest in manual trades, and 80% believing it will be harder to build stable careers than in previous years.

Despite this rising interest, educational infrastructure faces challenges. Some public high schools are reportedly struggling to meet demand, with reports of students being turned away from vocational programs due to lack of capacity or prioritization of traditional four-year college pathways. This disconnect highlights a gap between the booming demand for skilled workers and the availability of accessible vocational training in the current educational system.
