U.S. Gen Z Shows Strong Preference for Meaningful, Well‑Paying Jobs

A Gallup survey of 2,436 Americans aged 13‑28, conducted in December 2025, found that nearly 80 % of Gen Z respondents are interested in jobs that help other people. Among those who value a positive impact, 89 % say they feel their lives are meaningful. The study links this sense of purpose to better mental health, noting that many young adults face loneliness, screen‑time excess, and mental‑health challenges. However, about half of respondents cite low pay and high stress as deterrents to care‑focused work. When asked whether they would choose a higher‑paying job over a more meaningful one, roughly 50 % said they would take the better‑paid position, though many would stay in a meaningful role if their salary were adequate. The findings highlight the tension Gen Z faces between the desire to help, personal well‑being, and financial security.
