Gen Z protests spread globally over housing and economic inequality
A wave of youth-led protests, primarily driven by Generation Z, is spreading across Europe and parts of Asia and Africa. Demonstrators in countries including France, Spain, Italy, India, Bangladesh, and Kenya are citing high housing costs, inflation, unemployment, and deteriorating educational standards as primary grievances.
In Spain, the movement has intensified following the death of 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal, which sparked national outrage over evictions. In response to mounting pressure, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez proposed legislative decrees to suspend evictions until 2030 and automate rental contract renewals. However, due to a lack of parliamentary majority, the decrees were defeated, leading Sánchez to announce early elections.
In France, approximately 1,500 demonstrations have occurred, signaling significant national mobilization ahead of upcoming presidential elections. Philosophers and political analysts, such as Massimo Cacciari, suggest these movements represent a radical generational break caused by decades of declining social services and economic inequality.
