Gen Z redefines financial success and housing strategies
Younger generations, particularly Gen Z in Canada and the United States, are redefining financial success and housing strategies in response to rising living costs and decreased home affordability.
In Canada, research from Meridian Credit Union indicates that 73 per cent of Canadians believe Gen Z is pursuing financial independence through non-traditional means rather than standard milestones like home ownership. Instead of traditional paths, many young people are focusing on building financial resilience through consistent saving, early investing, and utilizing tools like TFSAs and FHSAs.
In the United States, some young adults are turning to alternative living arrangements to avoid the high costs of renting. This includes the growing popularity of micro-apartments, RVs, and tiny homes. For example, influencer Annie Rose built a 300-square-foot tiny home on her parents' property for $45,000, opting for a permanent investment over the perceived instability and expense of apartment rentals.
