Gen Z women drive gaming industry growth despite leadership barriers

Gen Z women are increasingly establishing successful careers within the multi-billion-dollar gaming industry, transitioning from players to professional esports competitors, content creators, and brand partners. While women now represent nearly half of all gamers, they face unique challenges regarding professional advancement and industry representation.

Research from Lean In indicates a perceived leadership gap among Gen Z women. While 58% of Gen Z women express a desire to become senior executives, this figure rises to 74% among those who believe workplaces genuinely want women in leadership roles. This suggests that perceived institutional barriers, rather than a lack of personal ambition, may influence career aspirations.

Furthermore, the Women in Games ‘Drop-Off’ report highlights a decline in female representation as one moves from active participation to positions of power, ownership, and access to capital. Despite making up approximately half of the gaming audience, women remain underrepresented in company leadership and investment sectors.
