Workplace generational tensions drive Gen Z turnover
Intergenerational tensions in the workplace are significantly impacting employee retention, particularly among Generation Z. According to a report by Hays Poland and the OFF school Foundation, 71% of Gen Z employees admit that experiences with generational friction have influenced their decision to seek new employment.
The study indicates that conflicts often stem from differing communication styles, varying expectations regarding work flexibility, and a lack of clear cooperation rules rather than age alone. While 31% of Gen Z respondents report regular misunderstandings, both employees and employers identify a need for greater clarity in workplace rules and more effective feedback mechanisms.
In Germany, observations suggest that the desire for private offices among older generations can clash with the flexible, nomadic work styles of younger employees. However, experts note that both groups share underlying needs, such as a desire for visibility, belonging, and structured environments to avoid the instability of constant desk-switching.
