Mexico reports 53% decrease in intentional homicides under Sheinbaum
President Claudia Sheinbaum reported a 53% reduction in intentional homicides in Mexico during the first two years of her administration. The daily average of homicides fell from 86.9 in September 2024 to 40.8 in August 2026, marking the lowest level since 2015.
National security data indicates that since October 2024, authorities have made over 67,200 arrests for high-impact crimes, seized 34,353 firearms, and disabled 2,771 clandestine laboratories. The administration attributes these trends to the National Security Strategy, specifically focusing on addressing the root causes of violence and strengthening intelligence and investigation efforts.
Regional reports show varying trends. In Tamaulipas, the daily average of homicides decreased by 16.7% between January and August 2026 compared to the previous year. In Ciudad Juárez, homicide rates in August 2026 reached their lowest point since April 2016. Seven states, including Guanajuato and Baja California, continue to concentrate nearly half of the country's intentional homicides.
