Gender-based violence reports highlight rising femicide rates in Quebec and Chile

Feminist organizations and government agencies in Canada and Chile are addressing rising rates of femicide and gender-based violence through mobilization and statistical reporting.

In Quebec, Canada, a resistance movement has emerged in response to record numbers of femicides. Feminist organizations have established a pattern of mobilizing on the Thursdays following such tragedies, often holding visible demonstrations during peak hours to demand political responses to the continuum of violence against women.

In Chile, the 2025 Annual Report from the Intersectoral Femicide Circuit (CIF) revealed 11 cases in the Arica y Parinacota region, consisting of seven frustrated femicides, two completed, and two attempted. Nationally, data shows that 46.9% of cases involved prior reports of violence, yet only 11.7% had active protective measures in place. Chilean authorities have emphasized the need to strengthen regional coordination and timely protection to prevent violence from escalating.
