Gender disparities emerge in debt and insolvency trends in Chile and Argentina

Recent data from Chile and Argentina highlight distinct gender patterns in debt management and insolvency. In Chile, figures from the Superintendency of Insolvency and Re-entrepreneurship (SIR) show that while men represent 57% of personal liquidations, women make up the majority (55.7%) of those seeking to renegotiate commitments. Experts suggest this difference may stem from when individuals seek assistance rather than total debt volume. In Chile, the average debt for men reached $49.6 million, compared to $38.7 million for women.

In Argentina, a report by the Centro de Estudios para la Ciudad reveals that the total number of indebted women (over 10 million) exceeds that of men. Although women generally maintain a higher payment rate, the proportion of their debt in arrears is higher at 17.9% compared to 17.1% for men. The report notes that the gender gap in delinquency widens significantly among retirees, particularly in the 66 to 75 age bracket, driven by the need to finance basic necessities and existing income disparities.
