Gender disparities emerge in U.S. debt perception and sustainability
A 2026 Everyday Debt Survey conducted by Accredited Debt Relief reveals significant disparities in how men and women perceive and experience debt in the United States. Despite carrying similar debt amounts, women report higher levels of financial strain and lower perceived sustainability.
According to the survey, which polled 2,000 U.S. adults via Atomik Research, 53% of men believe their financial situation is sustainable long-term, compared to only 39% of women. The gap is also evident in monthly cash flow; 34% of men reported being able to cover expenses and still save, while only 21% of women reported the same capability.
Emotional impact also differs by gender. Approximately 17% of women described their debt as overwhelming, nearly double the 9% reported by men. These findings coincide with Federal Reserve data showing that the national financial cushion has remained stagnant, with 55% of adults able to cover three months of expenses, a figure that has declined since 2021.
