Gender inequality and leadership strategies in the logistics sector
Research and industry perspectives highlight the ongoing challenges regarding gender inequality and the navigation of masculine norms within the logistics sector.
A study of the French logistics sector, utilizing qualitative data from 43 professionals, identifies three primary identity strategies used by women to manage structural barriers: individual mobility through assimilation and sponsorship, social creativity by reframing roles to leverage feminine advantages, and social competition. The study notes that social competition remains rare due to persistent symbolic violence that suppresses collective structural challenges.
Complementary industry insights suggest that genuine inclusion in logistics requires moving beyond workplace policies to address practical realities. Key factors for retaining female talent include managing shift patterns, supporting returns from maternity leave, and providing mentorship. Experts emphasize that true allyship involves using influence to create fair access to opportunities and recognizing potential outside of conventional career paths to help address industry skills shortages.
