Gender‑based violence convictions handed down in Vera and Caraballeda

A 51‑year‑old man, Cristian Leguizamón, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for repeatedly sexually abusing his partner and committing related violent offences in Vera. The court heard that the abuse occurred over a ten‑year relationship, involved threats of death, physical assault and property damage, and was judged as gender‑based violence.

In a separate case, a 33‑year‑old man received a confirmed 20‑year prison term for the murder of nurse Rosángel Varela in an apartment in Caraballeda, La Guaira. The victim died from mechanical asphyxiation after being attacked in the bathroom, and the court upheld the femicide conviction despite the defendant's appeal.

Both verdicts underscore the judicial response to gender‑based crimes in their respective jurisdictions.
