Gene Schwam, veteran Hollywood publicist, dies at 96

Veteran Hollywood publicist Gene Schwam has died in Los Angeles at the age of 96 following a brief illness.

Schwam co-founded Hanson & Schwam Public Relations in 1955 alongside Adeline Hanson. The agency, which began by representing musicians and restaurants, grew into a major presence in the entertainment industry. His extensive client roster included high-profile figures such as Elvis Presley, Julie Andrews, Judy Garland, Barbara Eden, Lenny Bruce, Nancy Wilson, and Lou Rawls. He also handled publicity for the Cocoanut Grove nightclub.

Beyond his professional work, Schwam maintained a close friendship with director Blake Edwards; the publicist character in Edwards’ 1981 film ‘S. O. B.’ was inspired by Schwam. In his later years, he created Humanity 101, an initiative through Arizona State University’s Project Humanities aimed at promoting compassion, empathy, and integrity.
