Gene Simmons reflects on Ace Frehley and KISS band dynamics

Gene Simmons has reflected on the history and internal dynamics of the rock band KISS, specifically addressing the legacy of founding lead guitarist Ace Frehley and the band's relationship with drummer Peter Criss.

Discussing Frehley, who passed away accidentally at age 74 last October, Simmons noted the guitarist's massive influence on musicians such as Dimebag Darrell and Mike McCready. Simmons suggested that Frehley's multiple departures from the band were due to the psychological pressures of touring, stating, “Not everybody’s designed in their DNA to run a marathon.” He recalled Frehley once expressing that a solo career was necessary to avoid the mental toll of continued touring.

Regarding Peter Criss, Simmons clarified that past tensions within the original lineup were driven by drugs and alcohol rather than financial disputes. While describing their interactions as “great” when they are together, Simmons acknowledged the difficulty of their relationship when apart, noting that Criss has often felt victimized by the other members.
