Naples Federico II Hospital Delivers First Gene Therapy for Hemophilia B
On 24 July, the Azienda Ospedaliera Universitaria (AOU) Federico II in Naples performed the first gene‑therapy treatment for haemophilia B in the Campania region. The 40‑year‑old patient, Enrico, received a single infusion of the experimental drug Etranacogene Dezaparvovec, designed to introduce a functional copy of the factor IX gene into liver cells. The therapy is expected to maintain factor IX production for up to 25 years, eliminating the need for regular intravenous factor IX infusions that patients previously required.
AOU Federico II is one of only two centres in Italy authorised to deliver this highly specialised treatment and is among the few hospitals worldwide capable of offering it. Regional President Roberto Fico hailed the procedure as a source of pride for Campania’s health system, emphasizing ongoing investment in research and precision medicine. The treatment was administered at the Centre Hub for Haemophilia and Congenital Bleeding Disorders, led by Prof. Matteo Di Minno.
