General Atomics develops NextGen stealth drone with 60-hour endurance

General Atomics is developing a new flying-wing drone named NextGen, designed for long-duration reconnaissance and strike missions. The aircraft aims to achieve over 60 hours of continuous flight without refueling, a target that has not yet been independently verified through testing.

A key feature of the NextGen platform is its hybrid-electric propulsion system. This technology could utilize a combustion engine to generate electricity for fans or provide direct propulsion with electrical assistance. This approach is intended to optimize fuel efficiency and potentially reduce the drone’s infrared signature, enhancing its stealth capabilities.

The NextGen project is also integrated with the company’s Gambit family of modular combat drones. This family includes various models such as the Gambit 1 for ISR, Gambit 2 for air-to-air combat, and the Gambit 6, which is optimized for air-to-surface strikes. By using a common modular chassis, including shared avionics and landing gear, General Atomics aims to reduce production costs and accelerate development across its unmanned aerial vehicle lineup.
