General Atomics selected for U.S. Army Janus Program
General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) has been selected by the U.S. Army as an industry partner for the Janus Program. This initiative aims to accelerate the deployment of commercially developed nuclear technologies for military use.
The selected technology, the General Atomics Tactical Energy System (GA-TES), is a liquid-metal-cooled microreactor designed for remote, austere, and off-grid environments. The system has a baseline net output of approximately 5 megawatts electric (MWe), with an architecture that is scalable to roughly 20 MWe. It features a 40-year design life and utilizes a modular architecture that allows for transport via truck or rail.
To enhance passive safety and reduce mechanical complexity, the GA-TES employs pump-free natural-circulation primary coolant flow. The program will utilize milestone-based funding through an Other Transaction Authority-based agreement. Fort Hood, Texas, has been designated as the installation to advance the system through development, testing, and site-planning milestones.
