Carsten Breuer elected as next NATO Military Committee chair FAST-MOVING

German General Carsten Breuer has been elected as the next chair of the NATO Military Committee. The election, held during a meeting of NATO defense chiefs in Copenhagen, Denmark, saw Breuer defeat Canadian General Jennie Carignan. Breuer is scheduled to officially assume the role in July 2027, succeeding the current chair, Italian Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone.

In his capacity as chair, Breuer will serve as a key military advisor to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and the alliance's political authorities, coordinating military advice from member states. His appointment comes amid heightened security concerns in Europe. Admiral Cavo Dragone emphasized that the alliance remains ready to respond to potential Russian provocations or escalations on the eastern flank, noting that NATO possesses 4,000 pages of military plans to address various crisis scenarios.

In Germany, the election has prompted calls from politicians and the Bundeswehr Association for Defense Minister Boris Pistorius to swiftly appoint Breuer's successor as Inspector General of the Bundeswehr to ensure leadership continuity during this period of significant security challenges.
