General Edward Katumba Wamala retires after 47 years of service
General Edward Katumba Wamala has officially retired from military service after 47 years in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF). A farewell and thanksgiving ceremony was held in Mukono District to honor his long career in both the military and as the Minister of Public Service.
During his farewell remarks, Katumba reflected on his military journey, which began in 1979. He shared personal reflections on a 2021 assassination attempt on his vehicle that resulted in the deaths of his daughter, Brenda Nantongo, and his driver, Haruna Kayondo. He also recalled surviving an ambush by rebels while fighting Joseph Kony’s forces in South Sudan.
Local leaders and clergy in Mukono commended Katumba for his discipline, humility, and commitment to duty. Katumba expressed gratitude to President Yoweri Museveni for the opportunities provided to him throughout his service to Uganda.
