General Hospital writers explain Drew Cain character shift
Co-head writers Elizabeth Korte and Chris Van Etten have provided insight into the decision to transform Drew Cain from a hero into a villain on General Hospital. The writers noted that the Quartermaine family requires internal conflict to drive drama, a role previously filled by characters such as A.J. and Edward Quartermaine.
According to the writers, Drew was selected for this role because he is a relatively recent addition to the family and functions as an outsider, providing a “blank slate” to act as an antagonist from within. The character's shift was further catalyzed by his time in Pentonville prison, where he experienced a severe personality change following an incident where he was nearly beaten to death by an inmate.
While the character's portrayal has changed significantly since being played by Billy Miller, the writers maintain that the transformation is rooted in intrinsic character traits. The narrative shift also involved Drew's relationship with Willow Tait, which contributed to his descent into villainy.
