General Joseph Clairfield mediates Lebanon-Israel Framework Agreement implementation
General Joseph Clairfield, head of the Military Coordination Group for Lebanon (MCG4L), conducted shuttle diplomacy between Beirut and Tel Aviv to discuss the implementation of the Framework Agreement reached in Washington.
During meetings in Beirut with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Army Commander Rudolf Heikal, discussions focused on security arrangements, the expansion of experimental zones, and the challenges faced by the Lebanese Army due to ongoing Israeli military operations and destruction. Lebanese officials emphasized the need for a complete cessation of Israeli military actions to allow for effective army deployment and the success of the agreement.
While U.S. officials noted positive atmospheres during recent negotiation rounds in Rome, current data suggests no immediate breakthrough regarding the opening of a second experimental zone or the reduction of Israeli strikes. The U.S. remains committed to direct negotiations, with a tentative eighth round of talks expected in early September. Awaiting further responses, Clairfield is expected to return with answers following continued communications between the parties.
