General Józef Giza reinterred in Nowy Sącz
Brigadier General Józef Giza, a veteran of both World Wars, was reinterred in his hometown of Nowy Sącz on October 11, 2026. His remains were moved to the family tomb at the St. Helena cemetery after 61 years since his death.
The state-level ceremony included military honors and was attended by thousands of people. During the proceedings, President Karol Nawrocki posthumously awarded General Giza the Commander's Cross with Star of the Order of Polonia Restituta, one of Poland's highest state decorations. The award was presented to the General's family.
To commemorate the event, the Museum of the Sącz Land opened a special exhibition titled ‘On the Way to the Fatherland. The Return of Brig. Gen. Józef Giza (1887–1965) to the Sącz Region.’ The exhibition features historical memorabilia and illustrates the General's military career and his life in emigration.
