General Komornicki warns Poland lacks coherent defense strategy

General Leon Komornicki, former deputy chief of the Polish General Staff, has warned that Poland lacks a coherent defense strategy, leaving the nation in a political, diplomatic, and military defensive position. Speaking on the podcast ‘Bez doktryny’, Komornicki argued that massive investments in military hardware, such as tanks and launchers, will not provide true security without a comprehensive doctrine.

He emphasized that defense spending must address how the state intends to deter enemies, protect the population, and restore capabilities following an initial strike. Komornicki criticized the current approach where different branches of the armed forces develop in isolation and noted that military contracts alone do not equate to combat readiness.

Regarding regional security, Komornicki observed that Russia is conducting operations below the threshold of open war—including information pressure, sabotage, and border provocations—to weaken Western advantage and undermine NATO without triggering Article 5. He warned that the Baltic states could become testing grounds for Alliance unity and stressed that Poland must build a holistic national defense rather than an army designed for only one type of warfare.
