General Motors adopts AI to halve vehicle development time
General Motors is overhaulng its engineering processes by integrating artificial intelligence to reduce the time required to develop new vehicles from four or five years down to just two. This strategic shift aims to increase competitiveness against rapidly expanding Chinese manufacturers such as BYD, Geely, and Xiaomi.
Key technological initiatives include using AI to analyze hundreds of thousands of chemical combinations to accelerate battery development and reduce costs. GM also plans to implement a centralized electrical architecture, replacing multiple processing modules with a single central computer. This move is intended to lower production costs, reduce wiring complexity, and mitigate risks associated with semiconductor shortages.
Furthermore, the automaker is targeting the deployment of eyes-off autonomous driving technology on divided highways by 2028, starting with the Cadillac Escalade IQ. Executives noted that GM intends to leverage its decades of historical data to train machine learning systems, providing a scale advantage over newer market entrants.
