General Motors begins shipping EVs with 100% recycled battery minerals
General Motors (GM) has successfully integrated 100% recycled nickel, cobalt, and manganese into the cathode active material of new electric vehicle battery cells. As part of a closed-loop pilot project conducted with partners including Cirba Solutions, the company processed end-of-life battery packs to extract these critical minerals.
The recycled materials were refined into battery-grade quality and used by Ultium Cells—a joint venture between GM and LG Energy Solution—to manufacture new cells. These cells have already been integrated into battery modules and packs at GM's Spring Hill and Factory ZERO facilities, with the first vehicles currently being shipped to customers.
According to Kurt Kelty, GM's Vice President of Batteries and Sustainability, the recycled cells meet the company's established standards for quality, safety, and performance, offering results equivalent to those produced with virgin raw materials. The project demonstrates the potential to create a circular ecosystem for critical minerals in the electric vehicle supply chain.
