General Motors evaluates new electric Chevrolet hatchback for South America

General Motors South America President Thomas Owsianski has signed a memorandum of understanding with SGMW (SAIC-GM-Wuling) to evaluate new products for the South American market. During a visit to China, Owsianski announced that the company is exploring the introduction of an unprecedented compact electric Chevrolet hatchback to expand its electric vehicle lineup in the region.

While the specific model has not been officially revealed, reports suggest the project may be based on the Wuling Bingo Pro, a Chinese model that could be rebadged for Chevrolet. The vehicle is approximately 4 meters in length and designed for five occupants.

General Motors is also analyzing the possibility of manufacturing the new model in Brazil. Potential production sites include the Planta Automotiva do Ceará (PACE), as well as facilities in Gravataí, Sao Caetano do Sul, and Sao José dos Campos. This move aligns with GM's strategy to electrify its South American offerings through a mix of Chinese-sourced models, regional developments, and North American imports.
