General Motors expands South American strategy via Chinese partnerships

General Motors is exploring strategic expansions in South America, leveraging its partnership with the Chinese manufacturer SAIC to introduce new models and brands.

In Argentina, Chevrolet is considering a third Chinese-origin electrified model to include in the upcoming 2027 tender. Potential candidates include various Wuling and Baojun models, such as the Bingo series or larger SUVs like the Yuhhai, which offers plug-in hybrid options. This follows the performance of existing models like the Captiva and Spark.

In Brazil, reports indicate GM is preparing to launch the Buick brand to compete with Chinese plug-in hybrids. While GM officially stated there are currently no plans to introduce Buick in Brazil, the president of GM South America, Thomas Owsianski, has confirmed upcoming travel to China to visit Buick facilities in Shanghai. This move aligns with the extended 20-year joint venture between GM and SAIC, aimed at utilizing China as a development and export hub.
