General Motors maintains ban on CarPlay and Android Auto for EVs

General Motors has clarified its stance on smartphone integration, confirming that Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will not return to its electric vehicle (EV) lineup. While the company is introducing a new infotainment interface for its 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra light-duty pickups, this update applies exclusively to gasoline-powered models.

The new interface for these gas-powered trucks utilizes a redesigned layout where smartphone projection appears in a split-view or large card format alongside native vehicle functions, such as tire pressure and navigation. This approach aims to prevent drivers from having to switch entirely between the vehicle's native software and their phone's interface.

However, GM's strategy for EVs remains unchanged. Since 2023, the automaker has moved toward a native experience built on Android Automotive OS, omitting phone projection in most electric models to promote a consistent, single-platform interface. This decision has faced criticism from consumers who prefer the familiarity of smartphone-based navigation and entertainment.
