General Motors to expand hybrid SUV lineup in Michigan
General Motors is shifting its strategic focus toward hybrid vehicles following years of heavy investment in fully electric models. The automaker plans to introduce hybrid versions of three of its most popular three-row SUVs: the Chevrolet Traverse, Buick Enclave, and GMC Acadia.
To support this transition, GM will invest over $2 billion in its Lansing Delta Township assembly plant in Michigan. The company confirmed these investments to prepare the facility for hybrid production, though specific launch dates and technical specifications have not yet been officially released.
This pivot comes as consumer demand for hybrids rises in the United States, driven by high gasoline prices and a desire for fuel efficiency without total reliance on charging infrastructure. GM CEO Mary Barra noted that the expansion into multiple hybrid segments will not require significant additional capital expenditures or new engineering programs. The move follows increased pressure from dealers and competition from manufacturers like Toyota and Honda, which have seen market share gains in the hybrid sector.
